For all you non-believers...

I really can't get my asian goods in DC....

http://www.yelp.com/biz/china-town-washington

This is the my fourth week in DC...

I keep on forgetting to bring my camera to places and take pictures like a tourist. Should start doing that. Anyhow, just realized that after this week, I'll already be in DC for a month. Time passes and soon my internship will be ending. Which is sorta sad because after the end of this internship I'm not sure where I'll end up, def not in school this fall but I could be anywhere; i.e. on the streets of New York, DC, SF, or even LA. Hehe...notice how I said streets. With my luck I'll probably be on the streets asking for passerbyers for some spare change. :) I really do hope this is just a joke.

On another note, I'm thrilled about DC. (or most of it at least!) Trying to minimize the drama! Trying to make the most of it and trying to push myself.

So this pass weekend I went Kayaking!! I will steal pictures (from awesome ppl that took pictures in the water) and post them up soon! Then I went to the National Zoo and saw Taishan (or in my native Cantonese Toishan :) ) the four year old Panda that recently spent its birthday with a four layer bday cake!!! It was made out of bamboo and other Panda goodies! Ended the night with the Lincoln memorial once again and played the "I have a Dream" speech on the location that the speech was originally given. It was an awe-filled moment.

The next day I went to the Portrait Gallery Musesum on China-block. Awesome-OOOOo! :)

Starting to love the city. Metro is too expensive tho and there's not enough asians/ asian markets/food places/ stores for asian goods but I guess its a learning experience. Extremely humbling to say the least. I now value my Asian American Studies Major more than ever. Realizing how lucky I was to have such community and easy access to Chinese culture and goods compared to the rest of Asian America makes me feel soo guilty for taking it for granted most of the time.

Working on Capitol Hill has also enlighten me to think more about the politic process and API issues. After doing a literature drop for OCA (Organization for Chinese Americans, pan-Asian advocacy group for the promotion of cultural, political, and social empowerment of Asian Americans), on the Portrait of Chinese Americans, and realizing that most of the offices that I went to thought I was trying to advocate for a "foreign policy" issue further frustrated me. I think it was the "xiexie" that I got from one Florida office that really ticked me off. These people, the ones at power are the ones that are the advocates for their districts, if these people aren't aware of API issues, how likely are these issues going to be written into a bill and written on? Diversity needs to happen on the hill, although there are asians (very few), not many are higher ups. This needs to change. Surprisingly, in the military Asian represent 5% which is reflective of the nation, we need the same ratio for capitol hill. More about this later. I'm sorta peeved. God I miss California and all my bffs!!

LONG OVERDUE!

So let me skimp through my adventures in DC so far.

SUNDAY
The first week in the city was tough :(. I got into DC at 6:30 am and didn't get much sleep on the ride to DC from SF. I also started developing a cold during the ride and was constantly coughing.

Luckily, my roommate Laura was awesome and was really helpful during my first day in DC. Her brother even brought our aptment mates to grocery shopping with his cool car!

Monday
The first day of work, I went slightly late due to my direction-lessness. HAHA. I was introduced to the two other office interns. One was a girlscout!( How cool is that? When she finished her one week assignment she actually gave the office girl scout cookies! How can one top that? It's hard but I should really figure out how...)

Working on the hill is pretty awesome when it isn't recess because there's a lot of briefings and events that go on daily. It's pretty awesome because my supervisor encourages the interns to attend the events :)!

Wednesday
I had a really bad fever and a sore throat, so I had to stay home. :(

Thursday
Still sick

Friday
Getting better...

So at 1:30am I was actually suppose to be taking a bus to NYC from DC's chinatown...or China Block to be more accurate. Sadly, I couldn't find my way around and by the time I got there the other interns went off to eat. The bus was 2 hrs late. :(

Saturday
Got to NYC chinatown at 8ish. Brought a map of the city at the Metro Station and then went to check into my hostel located in the upper west side. Not too shabby for 30 dollars a night. I love the district, right next to central park.

After checking in I went back on the Metro to go back to Chinatown to hang out with some of the other OCA interns at MOCA (Museum of Chinese in America), sadly none of the exhibits were up yet. I checked out their gift store and they had Professor Min Zhou's newest book!! So I brought that sucker since I didn't know when else I would have the opportunity!

After MOCA we went along Chinatown, Little Italy, SOHO, NOHO area for shopping!

Somehow I sorta got scattered and I remet up with the other interns at 6ish for KOLLABORATIONS NYC.

trotted back home after the show...soo tired and soo sick...

SUNDAY
Woke up at 730am. Went to Central Park for Breakfast and decided to walk in the Park. Came across the Museum of Natural History. How could I resist? Then I tried meeting up with Brian (an OCA intern from UCLA and SF, how cool is that?) but sorta got lost in the park for some time...hahah). Met up with OCA interns Brian, Stephanie, and Andrew at the Met. Unfortunately, the Met doesn't chk in luggages and Andrew had a carryon sized rolly.

Luckily the DC Pride Parade was also going on during this time so Andrew and I decided to walk to Time Square to meet up with Cindy (OCA intern) and her friend who was interning at a Publishing company.

I sorta just detached from the others and stayed at the parade for a while before heading over to Chinatown to get some medicine for my prevailing sickness and to do some Chinatown soul searching...lol.

6pm-12am...How I got back to DC...this deserves another blog to itself.

General Observations for the first week in the East Coast.
  1. There's not many asians in the DC area. I'm culture shocked. I miss my fellow California Asians :(.
  2. No asians= little asian food and shops and supplies.
  3. East Coast ppl are intense. They don't play during Rush Hour on the Metro.
  4. There's a lack of late night in DC. You know how hard it was to find food at 12am? Extremely hard.
  5. Jackets are not required for the outdoors of DC.
  6. DC streets gives a lot of time for pedestrians to cross. The city is nicely planned. I love the metro.
  7. I miss my cali friends. Ppl to say hella to.
  8. NYC CHINATOWN IS THE BOMB.
  9. NYC is super safe at night.
  10. NYC is soo damn expensive...3 dollars for water?
  11. ppl in NYC dress really well...go figure...
  12. The CHINATOWN bus to DC-NYC is not legit.

first days in DC...

So my attempt to sleep on the plane failed miserably. I ended up only napping at the very end of my trip. I got to DC at 630 and then got to UCDC house at about 9. Good news...there are no bed bugs! Better news, my roommate and her brother rocks! Seriously. The brother drove us to Trader Joe's. Awesomeness!! My roommate is neat too, she took care of me last night when I was dying!

My first day of work was oh soo tiring. blog about that later!

Heat...

It's soo freak'n hot...

Currently at the library and observing how many people are actually here. It's actually a pretty good place to be at because it has a slammin AC :)!

I should really get off the internet with my addictive personality and all. The internet is only helpping me procastinate even further which isn't a good thing at all. My productivity has declined significantly due to the warm temperature. On a positive note, I finally used the roof top pool yesterday. It's soo cool! I should really have been writing/reading for my thesis but I decided to cool off by splashing instead. Boy, I'm going to soo pay for that. I need to graduate, therefore I need to finish the thesis, therefore I should get off the internet.

On another note, I need to write more. I been reading tons of blogs and these people have inspired me to write. Now, I got to just write more. I should make it a daily thing. Yep. Daily sounds fun.

It's week 4...

thesis is due in 6 weeks!
graduation is in 7 weeks!
SF in 7 weeks!
Washington D.C. in 8 weeks!
officially unemployed in 18 weeks!
